About Amy

Amy’s path to birth work has grown out of the births of her own children and from listening to the birth stories of friends, neighbors, and family members. Prior to her first pregnancy, she was shocked at how little she knew of the labor and birth process and of how many  people emerge from birth feeling defeated rather than empowered. After she and her husband participated in an independent (i.e. not hospital provided) childbirth education course, Amy’s curiosity for all things childbirth emerged and has grown steadily since her first pregnancy in 2015.

In additional to the  doula training (via Birth Arts International)  and the childbirth educator training (International Childbirth Education Association) that  Amy has completed, she also draws from  the intuition, knowledge, and awareness gained from her own pregnancies, births, and postpartum periods. She is  a mother of two and was able to achieve the unmedicated births she desired within two different hospitals, once under the care of a large ob/gyn practice and once under the care of a small midwifery practice. Birth was a transformative experience for her in learning her own physical, emotional, and mental strength.

Prior to becoming a doula, Amy worked as an academic advisor for ten years, helping students navigate their academic paths and become informed decision makers. After becoming a mother,  Amy was drawn to helping  people figure out what they want their birth journeys to look like within our complex, and often controlling, healthcare model. She strives to help  people and their partners approach labor and birth feeling confident and educated rather than fearful and unaware. She believes some of the most important work she can do happens prior to a birth in educating parents-to-be and their support systems.

Amy  offers a kind, thoughtful and reflective approach. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Women’s & Gender Studies from the College of Wooster and a master’s degree in  Student Affairs Administration from the University of Georgia.  She believes deeply in the power of   education and the capacity it has to  develop advocates and allies.
